Smartfire makes a BBQ temperature controller that runs your charcoal smoker's fire for you. A fan feeds air to the coals to hold your pit temperature, probes track the meat, and the Smartfire app lets you check and adjust the cook from your phone over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Which Smartfire pack

  • BBQ Controller 5.0 Summer Pack: The 5.0 Pro controller with an adaptor for your smoker, one BBQ probe, three food probes with matching cable winders, a USB cable and a storage case. You choose your smoker type when ordering.

Picking the right adaptor

  • Kamado Adaptor: For cookers with a sliding bottom vent, like Primo, Kamado Joe Big Joe, Big Green Egg, Dragon, Akorn and slot-vent drum smokers like the Pit Barrel Cooker. It ships flat, so give the ends a gentle bend to match the curve of your vent channel. It's also compatible with Guru-style draft adaptors.
  • Universal Dual Thread Adaptor: For cookers without a removable vent door. It's 70mm long with a 1 inch BSP male thread outside and a 3/4 inch BSP female thread inside, so you can lock-nut it through a pit wall or connect to a ball valve.

Probes

The Food Probe has a 2.4m cable for offsets and big cabinet smokers where the standard 1.5m probe won't reach. It's waterproof, rated from -40C to 350C, and curved for easy insertion. Don't leave probes in a pit above 350C.

Setting it up

Fit the adaptor, plug in the controller, place your pit probe at grate level, then set your target temperature in the app. Close the other vents down so the fan does the work. It runs on 5V USB, so a power bank works away from mains power.
